She rescued a freezing old woman, and upon hearing her story, became flustered.

Vika, a young widow, lives in the village of Orlovka, raising her two children, Milana and Semyon, alone after the tragic death of her husband, Fyodor. Fyodor died in an accident at the sawmill just before Semyon’s birth, leaving Vika to manage the household and care for the children by herself. Her days are filled with exhausting chores—cleaning, cooking, fetching water, and tending to the children—while she also worries about her upcoming return to work after maternity leave. The closure of the local kindergarten adds to her stress, as she has no clear plan for childcare.

One evening, after a long day of work, Vika notices her elderly neighbor, Akulina, standing outside in the freezing cold. Concerned, Vika brings Akulina inside, offering her warmth and comfort. Akulina, who has been enduring neglect and abuse from her alcoholic son, Viktor, shares her struggles with Vika. Despite her hardships, Akulina remains kind and wise, often visiting Vika and the children, bringing them food and sharing stories.

Over time, Akulina becomes a regular presence in Vika’s home, helping with the children and providing emotional support. Vika grows increasingly attached to Akulina, who becomes like a grandmother to Milana and Semyon. However, Viktor’s behavior continues to worsen, and Akulina endures his abuse, feeling responsible for his downfall.

One day, while Vika is distracted, Milana and Semyon wander off, leading to a frantic search. Milana is found quickly, but Semyon remains missing. Akulina, guided by an inexplicable intuition, finds Semyon near the railway tracks just as a train approaches. She saves him in a dramatic rescue, risking her own life. This act solidifies the bond between Vika and Akulina, and Vika insists that Akulina move in with them permanently.

With Akulina now part of the family, Vika’s home becomes a place of warmth and stability. Akulina’s presence brings joy to the children, and Vika feels a renewed sense of hope and purpose. Meanwhile, Viktor’s life continues to spiral out of control, and Akulina’s estranged daughter, Elena, remains indifferent to her mother’s plight.

The story concludes with Vika, Akulina, and the children forming a new family unit, finding strength and solace in each other despite the challenges they face.
