The river was almost completely frozen, its surface broken into drifting sheets of ice that creaked softly in the cold. Snow covered the banks, and the air was silent—until a faint sound cut through the winter stillness.
A Siberian Husky stopped in his tracks.

Near the center of the river, a Norwegian Forest Cat mother was stranded on a small piece of drifting ice. Her fur was soaked, her body shaking from exhaustion and cold.
